Servant Leadership: My Testimony

I came to Jesus Christ the first time back in 1969. I was baptized later around Nov. 20th 1970. I wandered in my own desert for 40 more years, much like Moses and the Israelites. I tell my own personal battle of back sliding and not having a personal relationship with Christ. Please view my blog at http://www.bloggingforchrist.net and leave your comments. Thank you and God bless you and your family.

Lesson I Learned From The Gift Of Hospitality

As we were growing up, my sisters and I would play house. Frequently we would pretend one would be the hostess and the others were the guests. We emulated our mother in how she entertained family and friends who would visit our home.

She always had homemade food in the freezer that could be quickly heated and served. Also, the house was always filled with freshly baked goods – cookies, cakes, and pies. No one left our home hungry. If they did it was their own fault.

Several years ago, my husband and I attended a church that was just getting started. The pastor approached me and asked if I would be interested in heading up the Ministry of Helps and Hospitality. I was excited with the opportunity and quickly recalled my mother and all the examples I gleaned from her growing up.

There were many facets to this ministry. I was to make sure Pastor and any guest speakers were taken care of on Sunday mornings. This included making Pastor breakfast, he had his peppermint tea (good before giving sermons), and bottled water and towel at the pulpit. I also made sure communion was ready for each service. The worship team needed water and towels on the altar and food between services.

We had many events throughout the month, and I oversaw scheduling all the food preparation. Weddings were always a favorite. Many times, we not only had food and coffee/tea for the bridal party prior to the ceremony but had the reception also at the church. I had a great group of women who were tremendous in facilitating these events.

My Sundays were quite busy. I found myself always in the kitchen as there was always something going on as our church was growing rather quickly. I was not being spiritually fed with the message. As my husband was part of the audio/visual ministry, we would get copies of the messages. This is how we both heard the weekly messages.

Sometimes I would feel overwhelmed and looked to the Bible for an example of hospitality. The examples I found was that of Mary and Martha.

Mary
The gift of hospitality is an art. Hospitality includes making sure guests feel welcomed and are well fed. This requires organization, creativity, and teamwork. Both Mary and her sister, Martha, had these abilities which made them the best hospitality team in the Bible. Jesus Christ was often one of their frequent guests.

Mary’s hospitality was more focused on giving attention to her guest rather than to their needs. She was more interested in conversation than the condition of her home or even if the meal was served in a timely fashion. Mary depended on her sister, Martha, to handle those details.

When Jesus visited their home, Mary sat at his feet and absorbed all he had to say. Martha became frustrated with Mary’s lack of help. Jesus helped Martha to see that Mary’s choice to enjoy his company was in fact the most appropriate response.

Does Jesus receive the type of hospitality in your life he deserves? Are you so focused on planning and running your life that you do not make time for Jesus? Or are you quick to respond to him by listening to his word, then look for ways to worship him?

One of Mary’s strengths was that she learnt when to listen and when to act. Sometimes our busyness of trying to serve God become a barrier for us in getting to know him personally. Also, small acts of obedience and service can have widespread effects.

Martha
In the days of Martha and Mary, hospitality was a social requirement in their culture. In those days, shame was looked upon you if anyone was turned away from your door.

Martha was the one who worried about the details – no matter how small. She wished to please and serve. In so doing, she tended to make those around her uncomfortable. Perhaps she was afraid shame would fall upon her if she did not measure up to expectations. She took it upon herself to make sure that did not happen. As a result, she found herself frustrated because she could not relax and enjoy her guests. She especially found it hard to accept what she considered Mary’s lack of cooperation in making the preparations.

As her frustration grew, Martha asked Jesus to settle the matter. Jesus gently showed Martha that her attitude and priorities, although her intentions were good, were not the best. He explained to her that the comfort she tried to provide her guests, were less important than the personal attention she could give them.

When Lazarus, her brother, died she could hardly help being herself. As Jesus approached, Martha quickly ran to him and immediately expressed her inner conflict of disappointment and hope. Jesus pointed out to her that not only was he the LORD beyond death, but he was the LORD over death – the resurrection and the life! Martha again spoke, without thinking, moments later, that four-day-old corpses are already decomposing. Sometimes her awareness of details kept Martha from seeing the larger picture. Although Martha did not stop serving, but she learnt what her sister already knew. Worship begins with silence and listening.

One of Martha’s strength was that her faith in Jesus grew.

Getting caught up in the details sometimes we forget the main reasons for our actions. Also, we need to remember there is a proper time to listen to Jesus and a proper time to work for him.

In conclusion, both Martha and Mary had positive qualities in regarding to hospitality. I found a balance between the two and took turns with other women so I could spend more time listening and worship in our church.

How God Uses People Has Transformed My Life

Before becoming a Christian, I did not have a purpose. I searched and searched but continued to feel lost.

When I became a Christian I was told that God had a purpose for my life. I questioned that statement. Why would God use me? What possible purpose could I fulfill. I was just an average person doing what everyone else was doing. I was no one special.

Then when I began reading the Bible I came across Jeremiah 1:5 which states, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” As I continued studying the Bible, I discovered God used many ordinary people, just like me, to do His purpose. A few include Jacob, Esther, and Peter.

Jacob
The story of Jacob can be found in Genesis 25-50 and mentioned in several other books. Along with Abraham and Issac, Jacob are among the most significant individuals in the Old Testament. It is not their character but the character of God that their significance is based. Even though Jacob was wealthy and powerful, he was also capable of lying, deceitful, and being selfish. He was not perfect. Instead he was like us in just trying to please God, but falling short.

Jacob’s life includes four stages, each included an encounter with God. The first stage was his birth. Living up to his name, Jacob means, “he grasps the heel” (figuratively, “he deceives”). When he was born, he grabbed Esau’s heel and then as he was older, he grabbed Esau’s birthright and blessing.

Jacob’s second stage was being on the other side. This time he was being manipulated and deceived by Laban, his father-in-law.

By the third stage, Jacob had matured. This time he grabbed on to God and realized his dependence on the God who had continually blessed him. His relationship with God was essential. His name was changed to Israel which means, “he struggles with God.”

Then we see the fourth stage of Jacob’s life, he was grabbed – God achieved a firm hold on Jacob and when Joseph invited his father to come to Egypt, Jacob did so after consulting God. We see even in all his life situations and a deceiver, Jacob’s task was to “father the Israelite nation.”

Like Jacob I had many encounters with God throughout my life. With each encounter. my faith grew in God and as a result my trust also grew.

Esther
We see in the Book of Esther that Esther’s character and beauty won Ahasuerus’s heart, and as a result she became his queen. Esther had found favor with the king but she would have risked her life by attempting to see him without the king requesting her presence. And there was no guarantee the king would ever see her.

Esther made a decision to risk her life by approaching the king on behalf of her people. Esther carefully made her plan. She asked her people, the Jews, to pray and fast with her prior to her going to the king.

Because of the delicate situation, Esther planned two separate banquets instead of forcing herself upon the king. At the same time, God was working behind the scenes. God prepared the situation by causing Ahasuerus to read the historical records of the kingdom late one night. The king discovered that Queen Esther’s uncle, Mordecai, had once saved his life. As a result, King Ahasuerus honored Mordecai. It was during the second banquet, Esther told the king of Haman’s plot against the Jews. Because of all the preparation and hand of God, Hamon was doomed. As a result, the day Haman had put aside for the Jews to be slaughtered, Haman hung from the gallows he had built for Mordecai.

Like Esther there are times when a situation approaches that needs attention. I have learnt that taking a step back and praying about it. Then when you approach the individual(s), God has prepared the way and has softened their hearts. They are more open to listen to you instead of you flying off the handle on your terms and make the situation worse.

As in Esther, God has a purpose for the situations in which He places us.

Peter
Simon Peter when he first met Jesus, the first words he heard was, “Follow me.” As we see in Mark 1:17, “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’ ” How many times have we heard those words “follow me” and dropped what we were doing and turned our life over to the Lord?

Every time Christ said for Peter to follow Him, even though he stumbled frequently, Peter never hesitated to answer that request.

Peter’s life, before he met Jesus was as a plain fisherman. After the meeting Peter became a new person with new goals and priorities. This does not mean Peter became perfect, he continued being Simon Peter. As Jesus was selecting His disciples He was looking for real people. Individuals who could be changed by His love. Then those same disciples went out and shared the message that God loved them.

We may wonder what Jesus sees in us when He calls us to follow Him. But we know Jesus accepted Peter, and in spite of his failures, Peter went on to do great things for God. Are you willing to keep following Jesus, even when you fail?

In conclusion, we need to remember that all human intentions and actions, whether for good or evil, are woven by God into His ongoing plan.

Once I discovered everyone has a purpose that God instills in you in even before you are born makes life that much more precious. That there is something that only you were created to fulfill makes me realize how important I am to God.

Watchman Nee Life and Quotes

Watchman Nee was born Ni Tuoseng on November 4, 1903 in Shantou, Manchu, China. He was the third of nine children. His father, Ni Weng-hsiu, was a well-respected officer of the Imperial Customs Service. His mother, Lin He-Ping, as a child excelled at an American-staffed Methodist mission school. While in Shanghai at the Chinese Western Girls’ School Lin He-Ping met a young woman, Dora Yu, who decided to give up a career in medicine to serve as an evangelist and preacher.

As an infant Watchman Nee was baptized by a bishop of the Methodist Church as both his parents were Methodists. In 1916 when Nee was 13 years old he entered the Church Missionary Society Vernacular Middle School to begin his Western-style education.

When Nee was 17 years old in the spring of 1920, Dora Yu was invited to hold a ten-day revival at the Church of Heavenly Peace in Fuzhou. Nee’s mom attended the revival and after, she proceeded to express her regret to her son for an unfair discipline for an incident that had previously occurred. This made such an impression on Watchman that he decided to attend the meeting the next day to get a feel of what was happening. Upon his return from the event, Nee gave the following testimony:

“On the evening of April 28, 1920, I was alone in my room, struggling to decide whether or not to believe in the Lord. At first I was reluctant but as I tried to pray I saw the magnitude of my sins and the reality and efficacy of Jesus as the Savior. As I visualized the Lord’s hands stretched out on the cross, they seemed to be welcoming me and the Lord was saying, ‘I am waiting here to receive you.’ Realizing the effectiveness of Christ’s blood in cleansing my sins and being overwhelmed by such love, I accepted him there. Previously I had laughed at people who had accepted Jesus, but that evening the experience became real for me and I wept and confessed my sins, seeking the Lord’s forgiveness. As I made my first prayer I knew joy and peace such as I had never known before, light seemed to flood the room and I said to the Lord, ‘Oh, Lord, you have indeed been gracious to me.’ ”

While at Trinity College, Watchman Nee spoke to his classmates regarding his salvation. He later wrote:

“Immediately I started putting right the matters that were hindering my effectiveness, and also made a list of seventy friends to pray for daily. Some days I would pray for them every hour, even in class. When the opportunity came I would try to persuade them to believe in the Lord Jesus…with the Lord’s grace I continued to pray daily, and after several months all but one of the seventy persons were saved.”

Shortly after his conversion, Nee wanted to be trained as a Christian worker. Although he was still a high school student, he attended Dory Yu’s Bible Institute in Shanghai. Because of his bad and lazy habits such as sleeping in late Nee was soon dismissed. Nee as he was seeking to improve his character, he found a British missionary, Margaret E. Barber who became his teacher and mentor. The two would meet weekly for spiritual guidance. Margaret Barber died in 1930 and left all her belongings to Nee.

While still a teenager, Nee fell in love with Charity Change. Their families had been friends for three generations. Charity was not a Christian and ridiculed Jesus in Nee’s presence. As this bothered him, he felt he needed to give up on the relationship. Charity became a Christian ten years later after finishing her university education. In 1934, during Nee’s fourth, “Overcomer Conference” in Hangzhou, the two were married. They had no children. Charity cared for Nee during his frequent illnesses and while he was imprisoned. she was the only one permitted to visit him.

Watchman Nee began writing in 1923 and at that time he published the magazine, “The Present Testimony.” At 21 years old he established the first local church in Sitiawan, Malaysia, He continued writing and planting churches.

With the rise of the Chinese Communist Party in 1949, Christians were under great persecution. Many foreign missionaries had false charges and arrests brought against them.

Watchman Nee was arrested on April 10, 1952, in Shanghai by Public Security officers from Manzhouli, Manchuria and charged with theft of state property, bribery, cheating on government contracts, tax evasion, and stealing of government economic information. Also, Nee was “re-educated”. There was a nationwide sweep on January 11, 1956, targeting the co-workers and elders in the local churches. Some faced long prison sentences while other died in labor camps. The Religious Affairs Bureau on January 18, 1956 began twelve days of accusation meetings and many charges were brought against Nee. Then June 21, 1956, Nee went before the High Court in Shanghai, and it was announced that Nee was found guilty on all charges and excommunicated by the elders of the church in Shanghai. Nee was sentenced to fifteen years imprisoned with reform by labor. Only his wife could visit.

Charity died one year prior to Nee’s death. He was not allowed to attend her funeral. The responsibility of caring for Nee while in prison fell to Charity’s eldest sister. Nee was scheduled for release in 1967 but was detained until his death on May 30, 1972. No announcement was made of his death nor any funeral held. He was cremated on June 1, 1972 before his family arrived at the prison.

Watchman Nee was a church leader and Christian teacher in China during the 20th century. During his thirty years of ministry, Nee published many Christian books. Also, he established churches throughout China. Watchman Nee was imprisoned for his faith and spent his last 20 years of his life in prison. On July 30, 2009, Nee was honored by Christopher H. Smith in the U. S. Congress.

Here is only a sample of Watchman Nee’s quotes:

  1. “Do not be taken in or flattered by your own success or fame. Take not only as to whether or not the old creation, including everything which comes by birth, has gone through the cross.”
  2. “A Christian ought to realize what the weights laid on his spirit are. If he encounters it in the morning and does not deal with it at once, he experiences defeat the whole day long.”
  3. “Prayer is the acid test of the inner man’s strength. A strong spirit is capable of praying much and praying with all perseverance until the answer comes. A weak one grows weary and fainthearted in the maintenance of praying.”
  4. “How true it is that without the guidance of the Holy Spirit intellect not only is undependable but also extremely dangerous, because it often confuses the issue of right and wrong.”

How Christ Has Saved My Life

I was raised in a religious home and went to 12 years of private school. As a family we went to church every week. But something was missing and I felt empty inside.

My search began with delving into the New Age. I purchased a variety of books on several subjects but the gap was not filled. In fact I even felt emptier and sad that I did not find what I was looking for. Even though I did not know it then, God had His hand on me for I did not get very deeply involved in the occult.

We see in Jeremiah that God knew us before we were even born. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

God made me for a purpose.that at that point only He knew. He kept my leash short so I could not go over the edge.

My search continued. All my life I felt lonely even when in a room full of people. I never felt like I belonged. I was always “out of the loop.”

I began reading the Bible. At first it did not make a whole lot of sense, but soon I began to feel comfortable reading it. But one question that I had was what did it mean to be saved. Even though at sporting events I would see signs that said John 3:16 but I never went to that scripture. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

Finally I wrote to a Christian radio station and asked how to become saved. They sent me a letter and material that set me on the right path.

Shortly after I began a new job and my immediate supervisor was a Christian. She and I became fast friends always talking about God. I began going to Bible study with her and was amazed. I found what I was looking for. Although at that time I did not give my life to Christ.

It was a few years later when I met my husband . We were at an event and it was there we both gave our hearts to the Lord. We have been walking with Him ever since.

We both enjoy sharing Jesus Christ with others and bringing them to Jesus Christ.

In conclusion, God allowed me to test the waters and choose my own path for awhile. But He kept knocking at my heart as I was stubborn and wanted to “have it my way.” But once I turned everything over to God, my life has never been the same. Challenges still arise, but I am not alone. God walks besides me and sometimes He even carries me through the rough spots.

Life was hard and confusing. But once I turned my life over to God I feel more complete and not so alone.

I learnt how to be a Christian from a co-worker and other Christians I have met along the way. Also reading the Bible has enriched my life greatly. Today as my husband and I walk together we are learning from each other.

Today life is reading the Bible daily and learning all I can. My husband and I pray every day together. Our life is also filled with helping others not only learn about Jesus Christ but also those that are less fortunate and try to give them hope.

Do not wait to give your heart to Christ. Do it now as none of us know when our life will end. We are not promised tomorrow.

Also as the world gets darker, only in Christ will you feel the safety and protection. Man cannot give us the security you are looking for. Only God.

This is a great platform to share your passions with others.
